The real reason why we have summer vacation.

The story behind why we have summer vacation is that in the 19th-century kids had to help their parents work on the farm during the summers. This is far from true because during the spring time was when most kids would have to help their family collect crops and work on the farm. The real reason why kids got summer off was because school classrooms at that time of the year would get sweltering hot causing wealthy parents, teachers and students to complain. The school system decided that therefore the best time of the year would be a summer break. Also, the teachers need a section of time to train before a new school year.

  1. I did not know that. Thank you for sharing this. I guess it is good that the United States was a farming community, as I am glad to have a summer vacation, I would be very unhappy without one.

  2. I was really not expecting this to be the reason... Can you imagine just how many angry parents there must have been for this to actually happen? I feel like if we had a similar issue nowadays, schools would not adjust their policies to fit with the requests of the students/parents, instead likely citing an argument similar to "this is how its always been".

  3. Wow. Like Dan said, it would be interesting if parents tried that in a modern setting. I feel like it would honestly depend on the number of parents complaining. I also wonder how it would impact the curriculum if we all of a sudden had no summer vacation at all.

  4. I agree with all of this. I wasnt expecting this to be ther reason, I am glad I have a break, and yeah all the parents and students complainging about being so uncomfortable and not being able to go out in the nice weather. It actually makes sense. Teachers need time to prepare for their next students, and its really nice weather, but also too hot to be in classrooms, its very logical.
