Pearl harbor attack.
We have been learning a lot about pearl harbor this unit, and I am starting to understand why it was sutch a huge part of history. Not only did japan find a way to stratigicly attack the US and bomb a military site, they also ruined most of their military weapons and vehicles. All the people on the island at the time must have been so confused and scared as it was happening. People screaming, crying, running, trying to stop the invasion. Then after the end all the things on the island were destroyed, people dead, people hurt, families broken, its just so scary I wish it never happened but it also was a segway for america to get invloved in the war, and things went well for us, so that is one upside.

Although I do agree that the attack was fairly devastating to the people living around Pearl Harbor on Oahu during this time since it was extremely violent and destructive, I don't think that it necessarily "destroyed" everything on the island and killed a major portion of its civilians. I mainly say that because the area specifically targeted by the Japanese during this attack was the American naval base located in Pearl Harbor, where soldiers, sailors, pilots, and people maintaining the base lived and worked. Most of the civilian populations were farther away from the base, meaning that it's improbable that it destroyed local societies. Also, the attack didn't really destroy everything on the island, not even the entire naval base, since Oahu is a fairly large part of Hawaii and consists of many different cities in addition to the base at Pearl Harbor.
ReplyDeleteWhile I understand how devastating this attack was, I do think that this was in the end, in the favor of the US. I say this because, from what I learned this Chapter, Americans seemed very content with the policy of isolation. Because of this, a direct attack on the US would be the only way for them to actually get involved in the war in a more meaningful way. Had direct US involvement been postponed any longer, it would only make things harder because the Germans would only continue to gain power.
ReplyDeleteI do agree with you that Pearl Harbor was fairly destructive, but it actually really only affected the naval base. I actually think that Pearl Harbor was a relatively small loss of lives compared to the amount of people who died throughout the rest of the war. I believe that Pearl Harbor was a major event in U.S history not because of the loss of life that day, but because it was the turning factor that brought the U.S into WW2.
