Black Friday

Thanksgiving has been a widely celebrated American holiday for centuries. A more recently created holiday, however, is Black Friday - the day after thanksgiving. The tradition started in the mid-20th century, and has since been a huge hit among americans. Every year, it marks the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. Stores all around the nation post once-a-year discounts for people to take advantage of. Some shoppers are so vicious, that people have actually been trampled to death during the initial stampede into the store. When it first started, stores would open at around 6am. Now stores are open from the midnight right after Thanksgiving in order to squeeze more revenue from their customers.

Does your family participate in this American tradition?

  1. Another holiday, similar to Black Friday, is Cyber Monday. It is even newer and is essentially Black-Friday-style discounts but for online stores. Most stores actually merge them together and just have a sale for the whole weekend. Personally I take advantage of online discounts much more than in-store ones since it means I don't have to go anywhere.

  2. Do you feel that black friday is justifiable? Many stores begin their sales on thanksgiving, a day meant for being grateful.

  3. My family chooses not to participate in Black Friday because of the reason that Paige stated- it takes away from the meaning of Thanksgiving and promotes feelings of greed rather than thankfulness.

  4. Neither my family nor I participate in Black Friday, not only because it is literally right after Thanksgiving, but it perpetuates capitalism and harms society as a whole.

  5. My family doesn't celebrate Thanksgiving, so usually if there is a place that starts their sales on Thursday night I will go or through early Friday morning. I don't go anywhere that I know will be crazy.

    1. The weekend was the first of the christmas holiday season, so stores posted discounts to attract more customers to kickstart their sales.
