Music's effect on people in the 80s

In the 80s, a lot of different forms of music popped up and gained popularity across the nation. Some of these types of music, such as rap, had lyrics that were very politically based and some types were more "get up and dance" music which typically didn't have very controversial lyrics. This affected different people in different ways. Some people thought that musicians should use the energy they were putting in to their music to spread political problems and issues that people were facing. Others wanted the music to remain "dance music" because they wanted something to relax and dance to. So, my question is, to what extent did people voice their concerns and desires about music, and did it create in particular tensions between certain groups?

  1. Obviously many people did not approve of NWA and the message that they were sending. But the truth is that they were telling the relative truth about the way that African Americans were being mistreated, and many white people didn't like that very much.
